Kirkwood’s Emergency Response Plan

Kirkwood Community College is committed to providing its students, faculty, staff, partners, and visitors a safe and healthy environment. 

The Emergency Response Plan is a proactive, collaborative, coordinated, objective, and thoughtful approach to the prevention, identification, assessment, intervention, and management of situations that pose, or may reasonably pose, a threat to the well-being and safety of the campus community.

The plan includes information about:

  • Emergencies
  • Emergency response teams
  • Kirkwood’s operating parameters
  • Incident priorities and performance expectations
  • Shelter-in-place and evacuation guidelines
  • Local contingency and continuity planning requirements

Emergency Plan FAQs

The Public Safety and Facilities departments oversee the emergency response plans and operations. Departments coordinate contingency plans and continuity of operations plans for their staff and areas of responsibility. Kirkwood conducts emergency response exercises each year, such as tabletop exercises, field exercises, and tests of the emergency notification systems on campus.

These tests are designed to assess and evaluate the emergency plans and capabilities of the college. Public Safety officers and Facilities supervisors receive training in incident command and how to respond to critical incidents on campus.

When a serious incident occurs that causes an immediate threat to the campus, the first responders to the scene are usually the Public Safety officers, Facilities staff, and local emergency response agencies working together to manage the incident. Depending on the nature of the incident other Kirkwood departments and other local or federal agencies may also be involved as needed.

General information about the emergency response and evacuation procedures for Kirkwood is publicized each year as part of the college Clery Act compliance efforts. 

Members of the Kirkwood Community are notified annually that they are required to notify Kirkwood Public Safety of any situation or incident on campus that involves a significant emergency or dangerous situation that could have an immediate or ongoing threat to the health and safety of students and/or employees on campus. 

Anyone with information possibly warranting a timely warning should call the Public Safety office at 319-398-7777.

If a situation arises, either on or off-campus, that in the judgment of Public Safety, Senior Director, Vice-President Facilities, other administrative officials, or if advised by law enforcement, constitutes an ongoing, immediate, or continuing threat to some or all members of the campus community, the threat will be communicated to the campus community or the appropriate segment of the community. 

The warning will be issued to the campus community through a variety of sources, including but not limited to, the emergency notification system (text, email, desktop), e-mail, Kirkwood website, and signage at prominent locations on campus.

The notification will be issued unless in the judgment of the first responders, will compromise the efforts to assist a victim or to contain, respond to, or otherwise mitigate the emergency. Have more questions? Visit Public Safety.
