Career Exploration Experiences

Learn about careers in EMS including careers as an EMT and paramedic. Get hands-on practice of EMS skills including CPR, bandaging and splinting, and medication administration assistance. Receive an overview of career options and opportunities in emergency medical services. Held spring 2024

Explore a variety of healthcare careers in this exciting hands-on experience. Learn about careers in the fields of nursing, physical therapy, radiology imaging and medical lab technology. Held February or March 2024. Cap of 10. Additional hospital application process required to attend.

Time counts when a patient arrives at the Emergency Department!  Find out through a mock scenario how careers in nursing, radiology tech, surgical tech, and physician assistants work together to provide care for an Emergency Department patient.  You will learn from our providers about why our mock patient is having trouble breathing and how they will be cared for.  A tour of the hospital will provide information on the wide range of services available to our community.  Held spring 2024. Cap of 15.

This interactive, hands-on session will allow students to experience firsthand the field of medical laboratory science and how each area of the laboratory works together. You will learn about the career pathways for medical laboratory technicians, medical laboratory scientists and other laboratory science-related careers from knowledgeable faculty and staff, as well as students currently in those programs. You will also have an opportunity to hear from professional experts currently working in various laboratories. A question-and-answer session will be held at the end of the day, providing the opportunity to hear personal observations, stories, and responses to your questions about Kirkwood’s program and the field of medical laboratory science in general. Held March 2024.

Interested in helping people live better lives? Through small group round table discussions, you will have the opportunity to hear and ask questions from individuals in the career fields of social work, counseling and psychology.  Held March 2024.

Meet with psychologists, psychiatrists and mental health counselors to learn the difference among their specialties. Learn about current mental health treatments, day-to-day-as a mental health professional, and meet with current medical students on their path to psychiatry. Held Feb. 8, 2024.

Johnson County Ambulance Service provides an exciting experience for those interested in a public safety career.  If you’d like to learn about the skills and education it takes to be a paramedic, then this is the event for you!  Paramedics from Johnson County Ambulance Service will give you all the details regarding what a typical day looks like on the job.  They will demonstrate a medical emergency call scenario and the teamwork it takes to work in this field.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go to pharmacy school?  You will learn about the admissions process for pharmacy school, take a virtual tour of the brand-new University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, and talk to current UI pharmacy students about their experiences. Cap of 19. 

You will learn about the pharmacy industry from faculty/staff and professional experts (Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians) as well as students in the field. You will learn more about what a day looks like in Pharmacy careers as well as the education, requirements, and opportunities of this profession. You will also experience a couple of hands-on activities during this job shadow. Held Spring 2024.

Join a physical therapist at Team Iowa Physical Therapy to learn all you need to know about this exciting and rewarding career!  They will share information about what their job is like on a day-to-day basis, the skills it takes to do this job and the education needed. There will be time for questions and a game of Kahoot! 

Learn about the #2 ranked Physician Assistant program in the country. Meet with the director of admissions, tour the Physician Assistant school, have a Q & A with current Physician Assistant students, learn how to splint, and learn how to prep yourself for application. Held Feb. 28, 2024.
