Career Exploration Experiences

Learn about careers in EMS, including careers as an EMT and paramedic. Get hands-on practice of EMS skills, including CPR, bandaging and splinting, and medication administration assistance. Receive an overview of career options and opportunities in emergency medical services. Held Spring 2023.

Interested in Emergency Medical Services?  Let Washington County Ambulance Service help!  Students will experience the pre-hospital EMS setting firsthand.  Paramedic’s & EMT’s will have ambulances and lifesaving equipment on display to see & learn about. Students will learn basic first-aid skills and have plenty of opportunity to ask questions. Cap of 30.

Students will learn what it is like to be an EMT by experiencing live simulation activities inside of a simulated ambulance vehicle. Students will get to talk to professionals about their careers in emergency medicine and what the path to becoming an EMT looks like moving forward from high-school. April 4. Cap of 20.

In this job shadow experience we will talk about various health care careers; Nursing, CNA, Radiology, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, EMT are a few and the paths to get there. We will also allow students an onsite virtual reality and immersive learning experience. This may include time with high fidelity simulators and other hands-on learning opportunities. Cap of 24.

Do you love modern technology and wish to be part of the greatest period of healthcare transformation in history? Join us for a day at our state-of-the-art imaging center which is the heart of Iowa’s largest radiology practice. See how information technology enables improved workflow, efficiency, and quality across the entire healthcare spectrum.  Learn about the many careers in radiology, such as radiologist, radiology technologist, and CT technologist. You will be provided a tour of the imaging center and have the opportunity to talk to individuals in all of these careers! Held March 2023. Cap of 10. 

Time counts when a patient arrives at the Emergency Department. Find out through a mock scenario how careers in nursing, radiology tech, surgical tech, and physician assistants work together to provide care for an Emergency Department patient. You will learn from our providers about why our mock patient is having trouble breathing and how they will be cared for. A tour of the hospital will provide information on the wide range of services available to our community.  Cap of 15.

Interested in helping people live better lives? Through small group round table discussions, you will have the opportunity to hear and ask questions from individuals in the career fields of social work, counseling and psychology. Held late March/early April 2023. 

Johnson County Ambulance Service provides an exciting experience for those interested in a public safety career. If you’d like to learn about the skills and education it takes to be a paramedic, then this is the event for you!  Paramedics from Johnson County Ambulance Service will give you all the details regarding what a typical day looks like on the job. They will demonstrate a medical emergency call scenario and the teamwork it takes to work in this field.

Explore clinical and forensic pathology with a pathologist and a clinical lab scientist. Have the opportunity to investigate a mock case study and learn about the variety of careers available in pathology. April 13.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go to pharmacy school?  You will learn about the admissions process for pharmacy school, take a virtual tour of the brand new University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, and talk to current UI pharmacy students about their experiences. March 9.

Join a physical therapist at Team Iowa Physical Therapy to learn all you need to know about this exciting and rewarding career! They will share information about what their job is like on a day-to-day basis, the skills it takes to do this job and the education needed. There will be time for questions and a game of Kahoot! 

Learn how biomedical researchers explore science through critical thinking, research methods, and different laboratory techniques. Held Feb. 9.
